What are hemorrhoid symptoms? Symptoms of hemorrhoids vary, depending on the type of hemorrhoids and whether they are in the upper or lower anal canal. In the upper canal, they are in tissues like the intestinal surfaces and only feel pressure, not pain. In the lower canal they are on skin like tissue and can be painful and itchy. In an advanced stage hemorrhoids bleed. That is a commonly recognized symptom, but is not the only one.

Blood from a hemorrhoid usually occurs in an advanced stage, when the internal hemorrhoid has become irritated by straining or by passing a hardened stool. A bleeding hemorrhoid produces small quantities of bright red blood either in the toilet bowl or on the toilet tissue when the patient wipes. There may possibly be blood on the stool surfaces as well. Bleeding is just one commonly recognized symptom.

Another symptom of a hemorrhoid is a bulge or protrusion through the anus. This protruding or prolapsed hemorrhoid often becomes irritated. These are called external hemorrhoids. Sometimes a prolapsed hemorrhoid has a pool of blood within it that clots. That characteristic is known as a thrombus. This can be associated with severe pain, burning, itching, and swelling. It can also become cut off or strangulated.

The itching associated with internal hemorrhoids is caused by seeping mucus that irritates the anal skin and causes itching. Large external hemorrhoids that bulge out of the anus also may secrete mucus and irritate the skin. A person with hemorrhoids may feel the discomfort of needing to have a bowel movement, even right after having one, because of the hemorrhoid bulging into the anal canal. Generally speaking a large hemorrhoid with cause more discomfort than a small one. External hemorrhoids can become swollen and get squeezed by the muscles of the anal sphincter. It is a significant symptom when severe pain occurs. This can be the sign of a strangulated hemorrhoid, and may mean that emergency treatment is needed.
